Hands-On Flower Garden Rhyming Words Activity

This sensory bin game was a definite hit! It is very simple, and there are so many different options for setup. Let’s add some interactive, spring fun to your literacy lessons!

I wanted to create a sensory bin to make this activity even more engaging, so I took a few extra steps.

Supplies Needed:

  • Plastic bin or container
  • Dry beans
  • Flower Garden Rhyming Words printable cards (download below)
Fill a bin with beans and print and cut out the rhyming word cards.

Ways to Play

Keep in mind that the skill of rhyming should be taught before playing the game.

To begin, simply print, laminate, and cut the rhyming cards. I placed all of the laminated flowers into the dry beans to create a “flower garden.”

To play, I had my daughter choose one flower and then continue to pick other flowers until she found the rhyming match!

Another fun option would be to pick two flowers at a time and take turns with another student to simulate a matching game. This creates opportunities to talk about word endings and why or why not words rhyme.

Students pick a flower garden rhyming word card from the beans and find the rhyming match.

If you aren’t able to create a sensory bin, you can place all the flower cards face down. With a partner or in a small group, they can take turns playing a matching game!

Flip the flower garden rhyming word cards upside down for a fun matching game.

Additional Sensory Ideas:

  • Green dyed rice (grass)
  • Coffee beans
  • Dirt
  • Brown or green play dough

We love this rhyming activity. It has brought tons of spring fun and interactive play to our learning!
